Celebration and Freedom Train

Over 300 people from San Mateo County are expected again this year for the 2010 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration and Freedom Train. This annual Celebration, with continental breakfast, begins with a pre-program at 9:00 arts program at the Downtown San Mateo CalTrain Station.  This is the Freedom Train’s only San Mateo County stop between San Jose and San Francisco, arriving at approximately 10:30 a.m.

Peninsula participants will join 1,500 Freedom Train riders to the San Francisco MLK, Jr. Day and Festival at the San Francisco Civic Center.  Special Freedom Train tickets are sold only at the MLK, Jr. Day Celebration. Regular CalTrain tickets are not valid.  Freedom Train tickets are good on any return train that day. 

The Celebration is hosted by San Mateo County, individual cities, civic organizations and congregations representing the diversity of faiths on the Peninsula.  

The 2010 Honorary Chairperson is Harold Bloom, CEO of the Bay Area Red Cross.

The 2010 Honored Organization for Advancing Civil Rights is the Eastside College Preparatory School in Palo Alto.  

The 2010 celebration is supported by County Sponsor ReCology: Waste Zero.  City Sponsors are the City of San Mateo for San Mateo, Notre Dame de Namur University for Belmont and Burlingame Plaza Shopping Center for Burlingame, Wells Fargo Bank for Atherton and Colma/Daly City, and McDonalds - EPA for East Palo Alto.
